How to Perform a Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection at Home

A pre-trip inspection can identify common problems before they leave you stranded far from home. You do not need a professional workshop or an expensive collection of tools to perform a useful basic inspection.

Allow approximately 20 to 30 minutes and complete the inspection several days before your departure. That gives you time to address any problems you discover.

This guide is intended for a basic visual inspection. It is not a replacement for professional diagnosis or the inspection procedures in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.

What You Will Need

Gather these common household items:

  • Flashlight

  • Clean paper towels or rags

  • A piece of cardboard

  • A penny

  • Smartphone

  • A helper, if available

  • Glass cleaner

  • Windshield-washer fluid

  • Work gloves

  • Tire-pressure gauge

  • Paper and pen, or a notes app

An inexpensive tire-pressure gauge is one of the most useful items you can keep in your vehicle.

Begin With a Safe Setup

Park the vehicle on a firm, level surface. Place the transmission in Park—or in gear if it is a manual transmission—and apply the parking brake.

Turn the engine off and allow it to cool before looking beneath the hood.

Never:

  • Open a hot cooling system

  • Touch moving engine components

  • Reach near a running belt or fan

  • Crawl beneath an unsupported vehicle

  • Touch orange high-voltage cables on an electric or hybrid vehicle

If the manufacturer provides inspection instructions that differ from this guide, follow the owner’s manual.

Step 1: Walk Around the Vehicle

Begin with a slow walk around the entire vehicle.

Use your flashlight and smartphone camera to look for and document:

  • New body damage

  • Loose trim or panels

  • Objects lodged near the wheels

  • Broken lights

  • Cracked glass

  • Fluid beneath the vehicle

  • A vehicle that appears to sit lower on one corner

  • Anything hanging underneath

Look at the ground where the vehicle is normally parked. Fresh stains can provide an early warning of a leak.

Step 2: Inspect Every Tire

Tires are among the most important items to check before a long trip.

Check the Sidewalls

Look at the inside and outside sidewall of each tire as well as you reasonably can. Watch for:

  • Bulges or bubbles

  • Deep cuts

  • Cracking

  • Exposed cords

  • Embedded objects

  • Missing chunks of rubber

  • Uneven wear

Do not drive on a tire with exposed cords or a sidewall bulge. Avoid pulling out a nail or screw yourself—the object may be temporarily slowing the air loss.

Check the Tread With a Penny

Place a penny into several tread grooves with Lincoln’s head facing down.

If the top of Lincoln’s head remains fully visible, the tread is approximately 2/32 of an inch or less and the tire should be replaced. Check the inside, center, and outside portions of each tire because wear may not be even.

The penny test identifies a minimum threshold; it does not guarantee strong wet-weather or winter performance. NHTSA explains that tread provides traction, especially on wet or slippery roads, and recommends replacing tires at 2/32 of an inch. See NHTSA’s tire-safety guidance.

Check the Tire Pressure

For the most accurate reading, inspect the tires when they are cold—generally before driving or at least three hours after the vehicle was driven.

  1. Find the recommended pressure on the label inside the driver’s door or in the owner’s manual.

  2. Remove the valve-stem cap.

  3. Press the tire gauge firmly onto the valve stem.

  4. Record the reading.

  5. Compare it with the vehicle manufacturer’s specification.

  6. Add or remove air as necessary.

  7. Recheck the pressure and reinstall the cap.

Use the pressure listed on the vehicle label—not the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall. Front and rear pressure specifications may differ.

Check all four tires and the spare, if the vehicle has one. NHTSA recommends checking pressure cold and inspecting the tread and sidewalls for cuts, punctures, bulges, cracks, and other damage before long trips. Review NHTSA’s road-trip recommendations.

If one tire is substantially lower than the others, it may have a leak even if it looks normal.

Step 3: Check for Fluid Leaks

Place a clean piece of cardboard beneath the engine area overnight. Cardboard makes the color and location of a drip easier to identify.

Possible fluids include:

  • Clear water: Often normal condensation from the air conditioner

  • Brown or black fluid: Possibly engine oil

  • Red or reddish-brown fluid: Possibly transmission or power-steering fluid

  • Green, orange, pink, blue, or yellow fluid: Possibly coolant

  • Clear to amber oily fluid: Possibly brake fluid

  • Strong-smelling clear or colored fluid: Possibly fuel

Fluid colors vary by manufacturer and age, so color alone cannot confirm the source.

Fuel odors, brake-fluid leaks, rapid coolant loss, or large active leaks require professional attention. Do not start or drive a vehicle if you suspect a significant fuel leak.

Step 4: Inspect the Fluids

Only check fluids using the procedures specified in your owner’s manual. Some modern vehicles use sealed systems or electronic level measurements.

With the vehicle level and the engine cool, inspect the accessible reservoirs.

Engine Oil

If the vehicle has a dipstick:

  1. Remove it and wipe it clean with a paper towel.

  2. Reinsert it completely.

  3. Remove it again.

  4. Confirm that the level is between the minimum and maximum marks.

Very low oil, metallic material, a strong fuel odor, or a milky appearance should be professionally investigated.

Some vehicles measure oil electronically. Follow the dashboard procedure in the owner’s manual.

Engine Coolant

Look at the markings on the translucent coolant reservoir without opening it. The level should be within the manufacturer’s indicated range when the engine is cold.

Never remove a radiator or pressurized coolant cap while the engine is hot. The system can release scalding coolant and steam.

Brake Fluid

Check the level through the outside of the brake-fluid reservoir when possible. A low level can result from brake wear or a leak and should not simply be topped off without determining the cause.

Windshield-Washer Fluid

Fill the washer-fluid reservoir with an appropriate automotive washer fluid. Choose a formula suitable for the temperatures expected during your trip.

Do not use plain water in freezing conditions.

Other Fluids

Transmission and power-steering fluid checks vary considerably by vehicle. Consult the owner’s manual before opening a reservoir or attempting to check them.

Step 5: Perform a Visual Under-Hood Inspection

With the engine off and cool, use a flashlight to look for:

  • Loose electrical connectors

  • Damaged wiring

  • Cracked or swollen hoses

  • Wet areas around hoses or reservoirs

  • Frayed or visibly damaged belts

  • Loose caps

  • Signs of rodents or nesting material

  • Leaves or debris near hot components

This is a visual inspection only. Do not place your hands near belts, fans, or other moving components while the engine is running. Some electric cooling fans can start even when the engine appears to be off.

Step 6: Inspect the Battery Safely

If the conventional 12-volt battery is visible, check for:

  • Heavy corrosion around the terminals

  • A swollen or cracked battery case

  • Fluid leakage

  • A battery that appears loose

  • Damaged cables

Do not place a metal object across the battery terminals.

If the vehicle starts slowly, the lights dim during startup, or the battery is several years old, consider having the battery and charging system tested before departure.

Owners of hybrid and electric vehicles should not touch high-voltage components or orange cables. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for any system-specific checks.

Step 7: Test Every Exterior Light

Ask another person to stand outside while you operate:

  • Low-beam headlights

  • High-beam headlights

  • Front and rear turn signals

  • Hazard lights

  • Brake lights

  • Reverse lights

  • Parking lights

  • License-plate lights

  • Fog lights, if equipped

If you are alone, park near a wall, garage door, or large window and use the reflection to check the lights. You can also position your smartphone to record the rear of the vehicle while you operate the controls.

A turn signal that flashes unusually quickly often indicates a failed bulb or another circuit problem.

Step 8: Check the Windshield, Mirrors, and Wipers

Clean the windshield, windows, mirrors, headlights, and camera lenses.

Inspect for:

  • Windshield cracks or chips

  • Wiper blades that are torn or separating

  • Streaking or skipped areas

  • Inoperative washer nozzles

  • Loose mirrors

  • Obstructed cameras or sensors

Test the front and rear washers, if equipped. Good visibility is essential during rain, snow, dust, nighttime driving, and glare.

Step 9: Check the Cabin and Dashboard

Start the vehicle in a well-ventilated area. Observe the dashboard as it starts.

Most warning lights should briefly illuminate and then turn off. Investigate any light that stays on, particularly:

  • Oil-pressure warning

  • Engine-temperature warning

  • Brake-system warning

  • Charging-system warning

  • Airbag warning

  • Tire-pressure warning

  • Flashing check-engine light

A flashing check-engine light can indicate a severe misfire capable of damaging the catalytic converter. Reduce driving and seek professional guidance.

Confirm that the following operate normally:

  • Horn

  • Seat belts

  • Heating and air conditioning

  • Front and rear defrosters

  • Power outlets needed for navigation

  • Fuel or battery-charge gauge

Do not ignore a red oil-pressure, temperature, or brake warning.

Step 10: Check the Brakes and Steering

Before entering traffic, press the brake pedal with the engine running. It should feel consistent and should not slowly sink toward the floor.

In a safe area at low speed, check for:

  • Grinding or scraping

  • Strong vibration

  • Pulling during braking

  • Excessive steering play

  • A brake pedal that feels unusually soft

  • Steering that feels unusually heavy

  • New clunks or knocking noises

Some surface rust can produce a temporary scraping sound after the vehicle has been parked, particularly in damp conditions. The noise should quickly disappear. Persistent grinding requires inspection.

If braking or steering feels unsafe, do not begin the trip.

Step 11: Inspect the Spare Tire and Emergency Equipment

If your vehicle includes a spare, confirm that it is properly inflated and accessible.

Check that you have:

  • Jack

  • Correct lug wrench

  • Wheel-lock key

  • Owner’s manual

  • Jumper cables or jump pack

  • Flashlight and spare batteries

  • Reflective triangles or roadside markers

  • First-aid kit

  • Drinking water

  • Phone charger

  • Basic warm clothing or blankets

  • Necessary medications

  • Roadside-assistance information

Some vehicles use a tire-inflator kit instead of a spare. Check its expiration date and review its operating instructions before the trip.

Step 12: Check for Open Safety Recalls

Use the vehicle’s VIN to check for unrepaired safety recalls through NHTSA’s official recall website.

Recall repairs are generally performed without charge by an authorized dealership for the vehicle’s manufacturer. Checking well before departure provides time to schedule any necessary work.

Step 13: Take a Short Test Drive

Complete a short drive close to home before beginning the trip.

Pay attention to:

  • Warning lights

  • Unusual smells

  • Vibrations

  • Changes in steering

  • Braking performance

  • Engine temperature

  • New noises

  • Fluid spots after parking

Test the vehicle at both neighborhood and normal roadway speeds when it is safe and legal to do so.

Conditions That Should Stop the Trip

Do not begin a long trip if you discover:

  • A fuel leak or strong fuel odor

  • A brake-fluid leak

  • A soft or sinking brake pedal

  • Severe overheating

  • A red oil-pressure warning

  • Exposed tire cords or a sidewall bulge

  • A rapidly losing tire

  • Loose steering

  • A wheel that is visibly damaged or loose

  • Smoke, burning odors, or sparking

  • A major active fluid leak

  • A serious problem identified by a qualified professional

When in doubt, arrange an inspection or tow rather than taking an unnecessary risk.

A Small Inspection Can Prevent a Large Problem

A pre-trip inspection cannot predict every breakdown, but it can uncover many common safety and reliability concerns before you leave home.

Take photographs and write down anything you are unsure about. If an inspection leads to a large repair estimate, you can have the recommendations reviewed before deciding what to authorize.
